Odysseus and his crew return to Aiaia to recover Elpenor's body and give it a proper burial as requested by Elpenor himself. Circe appears and feeds the men. Circe makes them stay for a full day until she gave instructions to them to be safe. The next day she gave instruction on how to avoid the temptation of the Sirens who will try to kill him with their beautiful voices. Circe says hat no man has ever lived after hearing a song from the Sirens. Odysseus will have his men plug up their ears and tie him so he can listen without jumping overboard. Circe also tell them two ways for them to get home. The first one is through the trial that contains moving rocks, making it impossible for any ship to cross through. The second route contains two monsters in its way, Scylla, a sea monster with six heads that eat men, and Charybdis, a whirlpool monster hat sucks in water and vomits it out in the sea three times a day making deadly whirlpools. Odysseus had to choose to go by losing six crew members to Scylla or everyone to Charybdis. Scylla takes six of Odysseus's best men, and Odysseus and the rest move quickly.
