Odysseus's crew land s on the island of Aiolia, ruled by Aiolos, the god of the winds. Aiolos welcomes them and lets them stay for a month. when they leave, Aiolos gives Odysseus a bag of storm winds that will blow them straight home. Odysseus doesn't tell the crew what's inside and steers the ship by himself for ninth days. Odysseus falls asleep exhausted, the crew see Ithaca in the horizon, but one of the crew members decides to check what was inside the bag. They open it and blows them back, undoing all their ninth day trip. When Odysseus wakes up, he loses his mind, even thought he is the only one to blame. They go back to the land of Aiolia to ask Aiolos for more help. Aiolos notices that he has being curse by the gods because there is no way he could've messed it up, Aiolos refuses and the crew sail for six days more to find the land of Laistrygones. The King Antiphates welcomes them by falling on the first man and drinking his blood. The crew sails again and lands on the land of Aiaia, home of the goddess Circe. Odysseus sees smoke so he send 22 of his men to explore the island, including his cautious man, Eurylochos. Circe welcomes them to eat. As they eat. the men start turning into pigs. Eurylochos noticed, and runs back to tell Odysseus. Odysseus decides to go back and rescue his men. On they way, Hermes appears and gives Odysseus a herb that Odysseus will eat and keep him from turning into and animal at Circe's table. Protected by Hermes's herb, Odysseus resists Circe's sorcery. The witch, realizing that she has met her match, frees Odysseus men. The Circe somehow becomes nice and pursues Odysseus to stay with her, s he does. After a long time, Odysseus ask if Circe can help them get home. She replies that before getting home, he should go to the lad of dead, where he will find the wisdom of the prophet Teiresias.
